Please see the photos for condition and bid accordingly. This bayonet is not in pristine condition but still makes a good appearance overall for a collection or display. The scabbard holds the blade in a very secure manner. The black painted steel WWI German scabbard is only in fair to good condition and has some small dents and scratches on the front and back and side of the scabbard and some pitting under the finish on the back and front of the scabbard. These grips have the round cleaning holes only noted on Amberg 98/05 bayonets of this type. The brown wood grips on the bayonet are in good condition with some minor gouges and wear marks present.
The bayonet catch mechanism and press stud nut are in good working order. The metal flash guard has some pounding dents present. The cross guard and pommel are in very good condition with four Fraktur letter proof marks present on the left side of the pommel and on the press stud button and on the front of the crossguard, The screw bolts and round nuts holding the wood grips to the metal grip are also marked with CROWN Fraktur letter proof marks. The 14 1/2 inch bright blade is in good condition with several minor areas of staining and pitting noted on both sides of the blade. All metal is polished in the white which was the original finish of these WWI bayonets. These Bavarian marked bayonets are also more scarce than other bayonets of this type and this makes this bayonet fairly rare. Top of the blade is marked CROWN / L / 15. Bayonets from AMBERG Arsenal are considered scarce and hard to find. The right ricasso of the blade is marked CROWN / ERFURT. The marking on the left ricasso of the blade is Crossed Keys / F.
This original German Gewehr 98 Rifle WWI 98/05 nA Butcher Blade Bayonet is in good condition.
